There is a curve to the earth because if you draw a equilateral triangle on a flat surface...i.e a piece of paper the angels will be 60 degrees

If you draw the same equilateral triangle on the earth the angels will be more then 60 degrees, which prooves the earth has a curvature

If you were to draw the same triangle a shape that curved in on itself (the opposite of earth) then the angels would be less then 60

stick a 10 foot high pole in the ground, measure the length of the shadow at noon, have a friend 500 miles due north of you stick a pole of the same length in the ground and he measures the shadow on the same day also at noon.  His shadow will be longer.  Use some basic trigonometry to calculate the circumference of the earth using the two triangles.

If you look out to sea the horizon looks a bit round. If took a long flat plank of wood out to sea and put it on the sea the ends of the wood would be out of the water. Didn't explain it well. Also if you look out to sea at a boat in the distance the boat can appear sunken, you can't see the bottom of the boat because it has dispeared behind the sea. If you know what I mean.
