I am thinking of getting a whole house fan, but the one that is big enough for my house has a 2 speed switch, and I want to know if I can put a timer on it.

  1. Yes you can just install the timer ahead of the two speed switch. Use a T101, you can get it at Home Depot or at Lowes.

  2. Yes, the 2-speed switch shouldn't matter.

However, some timers are classified as "incandescent only", meaning they are not meant for inductive loads (motors, pumps, etc.).  See if you can find one that is rated for inductive loads.

  3. Sure you can. Make sure that the amp rating is higher than the fans amp draw.

  4. HVAC Tech.:  Yes but it will only run in what ever speed the selector switch is set to. Another precaution is to make sure the timer can handle the amp load of the motor. Good luck!!

  6. Are you talking about a whole house fan or an attic fan?  We live in Southern California and love our whole house fan.  We run it in the morning and as soon as the outside temp gets cool in the evenings (and sleep with it on all night, although it usually gets too cold and we have to turn it off).   I do not know if you can put a timer on it but I would not want a timer on our whole house fan (I understand the benefit for an attic fan).  The times of day that we are able to use it change every day.  Also, what if it came on and none of the windows were open?  Would it burn out the motor?  I have also read about a dangerous back draft that can occur.    If you are in So Cal, you can get a $50 rebate from Edison by using one of the fans they have approved on their website.
