Can you put any muffler on any motorcycle? please answer?

Question

the muffler portion of my 1978 gs550 is rotten out rather then pay 200 bucks per side for an aftermarket muffler,(the bikes not worth that much) can i just pay 50 bucks for a couple (2) standard motorcycle mufflers?

(the pair i found are from a honda shadow)

also would there be a problem with putting a muffler from a 800cc twin cylinder on my 550cc four cylinder?

if you can make them fit,go for it,may have to tinker with the air/fuel mixture tho

its a straight 4 cylinder , the fittings have to be the same like madog says if you can make it fit !
