Can you put high temperature paint on a chrome exhaust without high temperature primer?

i dont like how flashy the chrome is on my bike, so i would like to paint it black like i did with dirt bike,but my dirt bike didnt have a chrome exhaust, do you need to put high temperature primer on the chrome first?

  1. it will flake instantly within 24 hours, high temo means it wont discolour or cook. but no primer is the same in painting whether its high heat, or anything. even more so with an chrome exhaust. also the chrome is smooth so where you are painting needs to be scuffed up pretty good before applying paint or a primer


  2. Just wrap it with exhaust tape.

  3. you will need to grind off ALL the chrome before painting. Not worth the effort. For a Hooligan Kustom look try wrapping the pipes with hi-temp insulation tape. You'll find it in most hot rod or chopper supply houses.

  4. I'm not a paint expert or anything, but here's my two cents:

    The exhaust would heat up the primer before the paint, so you need to use high-temperature primer. Otherwise the primer could come off and your paint along with it.
