Can you put iron-ons on backpacks?

i have a jansport backpack and i want to put a rinestone iron-on on the pocket. the directions say to turn the material inside out...with this work because the backpack inside is kinda like plastic?

I wouldn't. The heat from the iron might melt the plastic. How about glue?  Fabric glue if the outside is fabric, or any other glue if it isn't.
