Yes, and much more than on a cd-r. You've got roughly 4.3 GB on a dvd-r after it is formatted. There's only  700MB on a cd-r or about 0.7 GB. Downside is that it won't play in cd only drives or players.

Yes you can put music on DVDs and they will play in most DVD players but they will not play in most CD players or in most car players.

My car stereo plays MP3 format so I record about 1200 songs on a regular CD in MP3 format and with a 6 disk changer could, in theory, have about 7500 songs.

The big advantage to the DVD R is it will hold 4.7Gb if you are backing up music it takes a lot less space but you need to make sure you can play it where you want it to play.
