Can you put regular oil in a john deere tractor or does it have to be john deere brand?

  1. There is something special about John Deere oil. You need to know the exact spec and weight of the oil your tractor takes. If you don't know that then you are way better off having John Deere supply the oil for whatever model you have than to just buy motor oil for it. You can buy different brand oils such as Shell, Castrol or who ever but you need to know the right specs that belong in your engine. Don't be too cheap, ruin an engine just to save a nickel.
