Can you put sand in an aquarium?

can you put sand in the bottom of a FRESH WATER aquarium? insted of rocks? and if so is there a certain kind or just like play sand

  1. yes, but they have to be a certain kind of sand.


  2. It's called aquarium sand. They sell it in a variety of colors at Petco. It doesn't mix with the water.

  3. I guess you can, but it's not the best choice because it's too dark coulored, makes the water cloudy, invites more parasites, clogs the filter, and waste gets caught in it too easily. But if you have catfish, sand is a better choice because it is soft on their barbels (wiskers) but they can live without it. Plus gravel just looks better and cleaner than sand. Hope this helped a bit!

  7. yeah can, but i don't like it.

    i like gravel more.

    sand gets all mixed up when you are vacuuming the bottom, and it isn't as aerated as gravel is.

    and the sand will sometimes float in the water when it gets mixed up too much.

    gravel is a better choice.
