  1. you will need to have a 3rd party tool to help you copy songs in your ipod to computer as itunes blocks the ipod-to-computer transfer, here is a review of top 5 ipod  copying softwares(windows/mac): http://www.ipodtocomputer.net

  2. yes there are several 3rd party applications that allow you to do this but there really is no need to purchase them.  you can do this on your own. it can be a little time consuming but its very effective.  just follow the directions below and you should be fine.

on your new lap top, open iTunes > go to EDIT in upper tool bar and select preferences from the drop down window that appears.  a new window opens up and allows you to specify how you want your iTunes/iPod set up.  go tot he advanced tab in that new window.  make sure you check:"Keep itunes Music Folder Organized."  and "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to the library." Do this before you reverse the iPod.

now here's how to reverse:  (this method saves your music and video files as well as prevents the need to buy third party software.)  connect the iPod to the new PC with itunes open.  about 2/3's of the way down the screen is enable disk use and manually manage iPod.  select BOTH of these.  now go to my computer, and open it.  find the ipod in the list and select it.  now choose TOOLS > Folder Options from upper tool bar.  in the FOLDER OPTIONS window that appears select the view tab.  Below the Hidden Files and Folders entry enable view hidden files and folders.  click APPLY to enable the hidden files and folders.  now click the OK button to dismiss the Folder Options window.

now open the iPod icon in the window and you will find folders inside.  select the iPod Control folder.  you will find a music folder inside.  copy this folder to a location on your hard drive. (you can click and drag to your desk top).  as the name imples, this is where all your music/video files are stored.  once that copy is complete, open the copied folder on your PC hard drive.  inside you will see subfolders with headings ranging from F00 - F01-F02, etc depending on how much music you have.  You can click and drag these folders to the word LIBRARY in iTunes.  Sometimes clicking and dragging the folders will not take, so you may have to open each folder, hilight all the files in the folder and click and drag the hilighted list to the word LIBRARY in iTunes. this will copy the music to your new empty library. it is a little time consuming but at least you have saved all your music.  the only thing you have to do now is reorganize you playlists.  all your music and video files will be there.  sometimes some of the files remain in "apple language." ie: NPSD or LKML, etc.  Just rename the track and you will be fine.
