  1. I would remove the stucco first. Otherwise it may not come out as well as you would like

  2. You need something that will hold the nails that are required for the vinyl siding.  We normally use roofing nails.  Do not nail them flush, leave them a little short of flush to allow the vinyl to expand and contract in the sun and heat.

So the issue is will the roofing nails hold stable in the plaster or stucco.  My experience has been that they will not hold well enough.  Drive a few nails in to the material you are considering, and decide for yourself.  I would expect the material to crumble a bit, and for the nail to come loose fairly easily.

So, to proceed, you'll need to decide how to get a good nailing surface for your project.  One option is the nailing strips mentioned in another post, but you either need to sink them into the stucco or plaster, or add material in between so your vinyl will lay flat.  Another option is to nail osb sheets over the top of the stucco, being careful to hit your wall studs often enough to get a good hold.  This might get a bit heavy for your wall, so it depends on how big the house is.  Single story might be workable, two or three story it gets tougher.

    Good luck

  3. Yes, but you need to install strapping every 16".

  4. Yes you can, do you know how much work it would be to remove the stucco. Vinyl siding can be placed over any surface as long as it is sound.
