  1. Anyone working for HMRC, including the NI Office at Newcastle, can try. The NI number is used as a reference for all employees, and is now included on a lot, but not all, self-employed records.

There is no guarantee that the search will be successful. People with incomes below the taxable limit may only be accessed by NI Office staff, there are no HMRC records for them.  Also people change addresses without notifying the authorities, so address held may be out of date.

Information held officially is subject to the Official Secrets Act, staff are only allowed to search if it is required by their job. Either searches made out of curiosity, or information given to other parties, would result in the sack being given to the culprit.  Checks are made on computer workstations, and records held by Head Offices of records viewed. The facility is not available to the general public.

  5. Anyone in the civil service social departments can obtain the basics with just an N.I., however it is gross misconduct  to tell others outside the department. It is common practice by private detectives to bribe Civil Servants to obtain such info.
