Can you really get bad brain damage from boxing?

A friend of mine was going to start boxing and his parents are worried about the chance of brain damage. Should they be worried?

Think about it. When you go running, you put stress on your heart, but it's good to work out your heart, right?

Getting punched in the head is like exercise for your brain.

Oh yeah!! Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier, Joe Louis had some, and the one boxer I've recently noticed in the past few years is Evander Holyfield. When Evander talks, his speech is slurred, cant put words together and has a blank stare like Ali's trainers saw in him before he became a half vegetable. You can't take cannon ball shots to the head for 20+ years and not expect to have some kind of brain damage.

Having a headache is different from having an aching swollen/bruised head w/ a headache.  Continual head trauma can have long term effects.

Old football and track participants have ACL injuries that will go on for rest of their lives.

Boxing is not for everyone, but to each his own.
