It's  just an expression, has nothing really to do with cake.  It just means you can't have everything you want but some people sure seem to don't they?

no. Once you've eaten it, it's gone. So therefore, you don't have it anymore.

If you want to have cake i.e. keep it, have it in your posession. Then you can't eat it :)

It is an expression meaning you can't have it both ways.

I have a big banana cake on my counter - every day I eat a piece.  So I am techically having my cake and eating it.

I have had many cakes, and I ate them.  No problem.  They are in my belly, and part of me now.
