Can you really not be smiling in your passport photo?

I took my own passport photo so I don't have to pay extra money to get one done at the store. I heard from someone you are not allowed to smile at all in your picture. Is this true?

I don't think it's true. In my picture I was smiling...sort of... I think as long as it's not over the top like serial killer smiling or something.

that's a myth, you can smile as long as it isn't so huge that it doesn't actually look like you.

a small smile is fine.

i've seen several recent passports processed with smiles.
