  1. No, they don't make enough light, and enough steady light to be used as a light source.


  2. no.  They do not maintain their light, instead the blink at different rates depending on sub-species.  Even if you filled the jar up (which I do not suggest) not enough would be "on" at the same time to really make a difference.

  3. NO YOU CANT  IT WILL KILL THEM

  4. No.  They're way too dim to compare to a flashlight or a torch, and the jar wouldn't direct their light in the same direction.  If you ever watch them outside, they're just little specks of light and barely light up anything.
