Like if there are a bunch of horses talking back and forth, can you tell which one is yours? Or if you have a bunch, can you distinguish their voices?

  1. It is good that you do.  Yes, I can as well.  I  worked in a barn with 80 horses and each had their own whinny.  I could always recognize my horse in crowd.  It is like recognizing your friend's voice at a gathering.

I could tell by his whinny if he was hungry, wanted out, was in distress, or wanted to meet the horse that just walked by.

Count yourself in good company.  Your friend could learn something from you.

  2. Absolutely YES!!

  3. We have seven horses and I can recognize most of them by whinny if I am paying attention.  I am wrong occasionally but not too often and I have very poor hearing.

  4. nay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay

  5. Yes, I can tell the difference.  My old gelding has such a beautiful voice, I need to record it before he passes.  The one on my avatar...I wish he'd have a voice change, he sounds like a sissy!  Then the little one, he has a deep baritone purr when he talks.  The 4th, I've only heard her nicker.  Kind of weird, I don't think I've ever heard her whinny!

  6. Yes!!! A few of them!

  7. Sure can! it's just like hearing your best friend call out in a group.

  8. yep i can remember the familiar knicker of my pony that i havent seen in 88days :(, but i can also recognise my Tb boy his whinny is so manly but girly depending on what he is doing haha

  9. Yes, they all have different voices. Once you get used to them it's easy to tell them apart.

  10. Yes, my mare has a loud screechy whinny, and she sounds way differen to the geldings.

  11. One of my geldings flaps his lips like he is talking to you expecting you to understand what he is saying

i have done the same thing as you at a show... they made fun of me, saying that i needed to get out and away from the horses more

i told then when you spend as much money as i did on him he becomes your child and you rather go muck stalls and spend time with them  than  getting your nails done or go shopping!!!

  12. yep, and squeal and her give me food nicker!

  13. yes i can tell my horse apart from others. he has a distinctive whinny and i can definatly tell when he is whinnying!

  14. Yes Its really easy

  15. My mare sounds like a gelding...deep guttural whinny.

My gelding is 'hoarse' and sounds like he has laryngitis.  His low nickers are just a quick neh-eh-eh to talk to me.  At trails if he nickers people laugh as it sound's so ridiculous!

The filly is more of a squealy nicker.

I wouldn't know my filly with others but I know my mare and gelding!

  16. I know my horse's whinny like the back of my hand. When i first purchased him he would whinny everytime i turned around the edge of the barn. I just know his whinny after hearing that so many times. I recently took my horse riding with a group of friends and while we were eating lunch the horses were speaking with each other and it was so easy to pick out which one was Chance.

  17. Yep. Shes so high pitched she runs out of breath!!

  18. lol only one because she sounds insane and more like a sick seal then a horse.....the other ones aren't very discernible

  19. ya most of the time cause i have heard them alot

  20. Of course! Currently have 14 here on the place and to me all of them are very distictive from each other.

Also have two close neighbors that have horses, I can tell the difference between most of theirs to, even when I can't tell which of their mares it is I still know it isn't one of ours.

  21. I only have one horse, but I know his whinny.  I also know most of the other horse's around the barn.  Some horses sound exactly the same and others are very distinct (this one old lesson horse makes elephant noises when she is in heat...Attractive, no?)  Most people can, but I heard that sometimes the way our ears are built prohibit certain people from hearing certain sounds..So someone who can't hear high pitched noises may just hear the same flat drone-like whinny for all the horses

  22. Lol, definitely...you see, my horse can't whinny...not well. He's a gelding, and has a very high-pitched "mmrhrrmew!"...people always mistake him for a mare, but I can tell his "whinny" from anywhere.

And then, many of the horses that live in my horse's barn recognize MY whinny (lol, I'm renowned at my barn for my ability to whinny...). If it's a quiet afternoon, and my friends need some entertainment, I'll get the horses conversing with me by letting out a whinny, and listening to the horses calling back as they stick their heads out of their stall doors...

  23. I could always tell which one was my Ra, but then again, he was a mouthy b*****d (one of the reasons I loved him so much) and liked to let the whole world know he was there, so it was difficult to miss him. ESPECIALLY if there were girls around.

  24. I spend enough time with them I can usually tell them apart by their smell, if they cough I can tell which one it is, how they squeal when they fight.... a whinny - no problem.

I can't tell which relative I am talking to on the phone by how their voice sounds - but I can tell my horses apart.

  25. Yes.  I have four horses and can tell their voices apart (just like the two dogs).

  26. Absolutely!  And by their smell, too (like on blankets or saddle pads).
