I am going to Paris soon and though I find France better value than the UK for hotels/restaurants/public transport I find that the prices of drinks in bars for beer/coke/coffee can be double the British prices even away from tourist areas. Anyone know any cheap drinking holes in in Paris???

  1. www.l'artscenik.com

good atmosphere and 2€ a pint

  2. Drink prices in France generally and in Paris in particular  tned to be higher than in the UK because the habit of people, boith locals and tourists, is to sit and nurse one drink for a considerable period of time. The establishments therefore factor this in and the higher prices reflect the notion that you are paying "rent' for the space in that sidewalk cafe. No decent Parisian cafe would consider hustling you to buy another drink or try to hurry you out the door.

Prices are lower away from the tourist areas but the difficulty is that its not likely you'd really get that far away from a tourist area in Paris.

However, please note that prices are two tiered in most places and that if you stand and drink its cheaper than if you sit. So if you're drinking for effect (as I notice most Brits seem to do) then you should stand at the the bar (Le zinc) and both order and consume your drinks there.

  3. Well there is a few nice area with a lots of nice Bars/Pubs and Cafes.

You have "La Galerie", The "Bario Latino" and "La Fabrique" which are nice pubs. There are all located in the Bastille area.

You have a very nice french restaurant located in "Place d'Italie" on the 13th quarter. The name of this restaurant is "La Virgule". It is always busy so they may ask you to wait around 10 to 20 min to get a table.

The address is : Restaurant la Virgule, 9 rue Véronèse 75013 PARIS.

There is a very nice Scottish pub called "The Auld Alliance" on the 4th quarter it is next to the subway station "Saint Paul" (Ligne # 1). If you going there have a wee look at the "Place des Voges", the area is very lovely and there is a lots of nice restaurants is there as well.

With this below link you can have a view of Paris sorted by quarters.

Oh yes ! Before I forget, unlike in the US the tip and the vap are both included into your total price.

You can leave an addictional tip if you like but it is not necessary (That's why the most of the french do not leave a tip when they are in a foreign country and some people think we are .....rude but the most of them think it is like in France).

I wish you a pleasant stay in France !
