Question:

Can you recommend a good engine gasket kit?

Hi. How are you?

I am rebuilding my motorcycle engine from the top down. Most of the gaskets are toast. I priced out the replacement OEM gaskets and Holy S#!t are they overpriced. I've heard of people making they're own gaskets by tracing the originals onto stock material. Where can I get said material? Do I need different material for different gaskets (heads, engine side-covers, etc.)? Anyone know a cheap reliable intenet supplier who can ship this to me and answer my questions in detail?

Thanks,

JMB

  1. I've been working on cars for a very long time (43 years) and I know for a fact that if you use cheap stuff you get what you pay for.

Buy the new gasket set and be done with it.  It will cost less in the long run than takeing it apart two or three times with the home made gaskets.

Not all gaskets are the same thickness and it can cause road side break downs or worst.  A head gasket has metal in it so there is no way to just make one of those.

As for the high temp glue gasket maker stuff.  Its best used for smearing a thin film on the new gasket to help hold it in place while you put the part in place..THIN LAYER,,, and thats all for the glue stuff.

  2. your spending all that monet on the parts for a complete rebuild and wanna cheap out on gaskets?

  3. Your doing a top to bottom rebuild and now you want to get cheap with the gaskets? Not a good idea at all. Many gaskets are made of special materials that you would have trouble duplicating.Your desire to save a few bucks could cost you plenty in the long run.Try looking at the Cometic company and see if they have what you need.

  4. i no for sure auto parts stores carry form a gasket made of a thin cork material  you could use that i would check on the head gaskets though they maybe made of diffrent materials like metal for higher heat also you can get some gasket maker in a silicone form this stuff works good to it is in a tube easy to apply i used it on my race car engine and worked fine
