I need to buy a bolt action .223 rifle. What is a good make and model? I like the remington model seven but it is $700. Is there anything cheaper that is decent?

  1. I think you will be very happy with the Savage Model 12 BVSS.  Savage has a reputation for making some of the finest shooting guns on the market and at a very sweet price.  Top it with a Leupold 3.5 X 10 VX-L scope and you will have a mighty fine varmint gun.

  2. I have a Ruger 77 that is awesome. It has a stainless steel barrel and a synthetic stock. I currently have a BSA 8-32x40 scope on it and it does 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with my reloads. I've had it since 1992 and never had any trouble with it. It cost $400 then and I don't think the price has gone up much.

  3. The Savage Model 12FVSS --- See the below link...

You will note theres an $800 price on it. This is just the maufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP)..... You can pick these up at most gun dealers for about 20% less which is right in your price range....

Be sure to check out and save this page.... Lots of .223 info....

  4. Savage model 11 Hunter, under 500 bucks, best bang for the buck in .223.

  5. +1 on the Savage 12 BVSS.  Another choice in that price range is the CZ 527 Varmint Synthetic.  It is stocked with an H-S Precision fiberglass stock with aluminum bedding block that is out of this world.  It had a detachable box magazine and the action is a mini-Mauser, with all the advantages of the Mauser design.

Between the two, the CZ is lighter and has as good of accuracy as the Savage, and in my mind, prettier.  However, you cannot go wrong with the Savage.

If you don't need a varmint weight barrel, both Savage and CZ make 223 rifles with sporter weight barrels that are lighter and more economical.

  6. Savage, Tikka etc....

  7. The savage varminter is a great shooting gun.  Also Remington makes a varmint.  One of the best shooting guns I've ever shot is a CZ, also about 7 other people I work with own CZ's and make the same claim.  We sell a lot of the CZ's at the sporting goods store I work at.  Ruger also makes a numbe 1 that is a good shooter.

I would suggest you look at at least a couple of the above mentioned guns and see what gun you like the best, i.e. which gun fits you the best.
