Question:

Can you recommend a paint-on product for basement flooring?

I've just finished tearing up the old, moldy carpeting in this basement and I'm looking for a product to cover the bare concrete. Something to protect against moisture, flooding, and dreaded cat urine. :P A nice appearance is helpful also as this is a living space. Thanks!

  1. I'd recommend a 'garage floor epoxy'.  There are several manufacturers, and can be found at most hardware and building supply stores.  A garage floor epoxy tends to dry harder, and thus lasts longer, than standard floor paint.  There's also a pretty good selection of colors available right off the shelf now too.

Most of these epoxys can be applied with typical paint tools, and take about 24 hours to cure.

Quikrete is one manufacturer, but there are others, ...even Sears carries one.

  2. Floor epoxy sealent. It isn't very expensive either

  3. I just had that carpet installed two weeks ago!  What are you people doing down there?

  4. Go to Home Depot (or Lowes).

Ask the helpful staff there to point you inthe right direction.

Wonder's father did the same thing... used a nice heavy-duty gray paint to paint the concrete floor in a basement ... it looks great.

I always find the staff at those Home Depot-type places to be VERY HELPFUL.

  5. You have to be very careful painting a basement floor.  If any moisture is coming up through the concrete, it will lift any paint you apply.  There are very specific pre-prep (testing), prep, and application procedures each manufacturer requires to assure bonding.  It can really be a mess if the paint starts peeling after a few months.
