  1. Yes, you have to give written notice at least 24 hours in advance.

  2. Yes! And please do.  I work in Special Education and have found that is not only important but vital!  It is important for all involved to be able to refer back to what is said in order to best help the students.  Hope that helps!

  3. Yes you can have the IEP meeting recorded and/or record it yourself. You must however let them know you wish to do this. See ADA(American with Disabilities Act)

II-7.1000 Equally effective communication. A public entity must ensure that its communications with individuals with disabilities are as effective as communications with others. This obligation, however, does not require a public entity to take any action that it can demonstrate would result in a fundamental alteration in the nature of its services, programs, or activities, or in undue financial and administrative burdens.

In order to provide equal access, a public accommodation is required to make available appropriate auxiliary aids and services where necessary to ensure effective communication.

What are auxiliary aids and services? Auxiliary aids and services include a wide range of services and devices that promote effective communication.

Examples of auxiliary aids and services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing include qualified interpreters, notetakers, computer-aided transcription services, written materials, telephone handset amplifiers, assistive listening systems, telephones compatible with hearing aids, closed caption decoders, open and closed captioning, telecommunications devices for deaf persons (TDD's), videotext displays, and exchange of written notes.ETC.

  4. If they refuse to let you record meeting, request 'prior written notice' on their refusal.

Call your state dept of education and tell them the school is not wanting you to record, and tell them you want them to call the school to tell them you can record.

A famous sped lawyer Pete Wright, said one time he just walked in the meeting and put the recorder on the table. When he was told to remove it, he put it in the persons face and said 'state that for the record please'

Nothing more was said about it.

  5. You may audio tape the meeting but must give the other parties notice so they can audio tape it as well.

  6. YES! By federal law, the school is required to allow you to tape the meeting. By federal law, you are required to notify them that you will be doing so at least 24 hours in advance. They are allowed to do the same.

  7. Yes. Please give them notice so they can record it also. They will want to do that.
