Can you remove the Sony speaker clips from their speaker wire?

I have an older surround sound system that has those stupid Sony color coded speaker clips. Does anyone know if you can remove those clips and use the speaker wire underneath? Also, if I would like to extend the current wire (that is run behind the walls), would I use a wire nut to connect them?

Yes, those are just regular speaker wires with a special fitting for Sony products.
