Can you remove the top layer of paint leaving the bottom layer on?

I painted my green hutch blue five years ago and want it green again. Can I use something to take the blue paint of leaving the old green paint intact?

You can try but it will be very difficult to leave the green bottom layer intact. Paint stripper will probably remove some of that as well as the blue. It would be much simpler to just repaint it green.

I used to work in the paint dept. at Lowe's. As the previous poster said you could try but it's going to prove rather difficult your best bet would be to go to say Lowe's ask for a quart or a gallon(depending on how big your hutch is) of High Hiding Primer it is intended for going over dark colors and you may wish to consider having it tinted to a lighter green that way once you begin to paint and it dries it will blend in.

I have done a lot of work on the side for a professional painter, and I can say that I know of no paint stripper inviormentally friendly or not that will strip off just one layer of paint.
