Can you rent a car in Toronto when you're 18?

I know that usually if you're under 25 you pay an extra fee or something, but my friend wants to rent a car in Toronto next month (she's 18), and I don't think it's possible until you're 19. Please help me clear this up!

  1. In most provinces, you have to be over 25 to rent.  That's for insurance purposes. They will not rent to anyone below that age.  There are 1 or 2 provinces where they will allow as young as 21.

  2. poke around you might find some "owner/operator" outfits that will rent to 19 but they are rare and charge extra. try this

Most major chains require you to be 25.   I think http://discountcars.ca will rent as low as 21.

  3. As long as you have a driver license and a credit card

    sure

  4. When we had a rental car I wasn't allowed to drive it. I thought that the minimum age was 24 or something, but I guess it could have been 25.

They won't let you have it if you're under that age.

I'm 19 now and I still don't think that they would let me touch one.

Why would you want to rent a car in Toronto anyways? There's a lot of public transit that would be cheaper, and when I was there a few weeks ago we just walked everywhere fairly quickly.

It only took about 20 to 25 minutes to walk from Dundas to the Toronto Island ferry, which is like half of downtown.
