Can you rent a gps navigation system? car rental navigation is too expensive

i have a 7 days rental for the begging of september. the rental company charges 12.99 a day for the GPS navigation.

are there companies out there that can rent the gps navigation systems?

Here's a secret - most name-brand car rental companies, like Hertz or Enterprise, already have the GPS system installed in most of their cars.  There's no real way for them to turn it off while you are using the vehicle.  

So if the car they happen to assign to you already has the GPS installed, then they are going to give you use of the GPS for free as a "bonus."  Everyone wins - you think "gee, this company is so nice, giving me a freebie like that, I'll rent from them again", and they don't have to scramble to find the one car in the lot that doesn't have GPS.

So when you check in at the desk, just be really sweet and friendly and politely ask if they will toss in the GPS for free.  If you're a member of their frequent renters club (usually free to sign up), and the teller is in a good mood, they will often oblige you.

You can also get a cheap basic GPS from discount stores (Wal-mart, Costco, Target) that will meet most of your needs for much less than the top-of-the-line units.
