Can you replace a countertop without replacing the tile backsplash or tile on the walls?

We currently have tile countertops with a tile backsplash and tiles around the walls (beige). We're looking to replace the countertops with granite countertops (uba tuba) but we were thinking of keeping the tiles since having dark uba tuba on the walls might be too much. I'm wondering if it's even possible to replace the countertops without removing the tiles since they're flush with each other where the countertop meets the wall. In addition, I was wondering if there was any opinion on whether it made sense to keep the tiles at all or whether it would be ugly?

  1. Well, it might be possible.  Talk to the granite countertop company and see what they think.  If you are committed to replacing the tile w/ solid surface, then you can try to use a diamond blade saw and cut the tile used on the splash… if it doesn’t work out you can remove the splash & continue.  It’ll be work, because removing the tile will also entail tearing the face of the sheetrock etc.

BTW – for my money, it’s probably worth the extra time & effort to replace the splash (not to mention sink & appliances) if you’re going to get into the job at hand…

  2. There is a simple way round this the granite work top are made to go over old work tops
