So, as I was looking at petsmart online, I saw this mat thing. Now, I'm wondering if it's suitable for my dwarf hamster, and if you can replace the bedding with it?

  1. I wouldn't because you have to keep changin the bedding and I don't think you can wash this mat thing.

  2. ye sure but first make sure he is not allergic to that but i recommend a more natural bedding because i think it would be more smelly with matt but u could try it oh and one of the natural bedding ( wood slices ) are very cheap.. a bag of 1 $ can be used like 5 weeks depending on the amount u use....

  3. no

  4. No it is not bedding material for hamsters. It is more to provide a base in case of wire cages with wire bottoms. If you have such a cage, you can use it to prevent any hurt to the hamster's paws from walking on wire surface by putting it as a base and then putting the normal hamster's bedding on top.

Remember that hamsters are burrowing animals and live in holes in ground. The same behavior would be seen in hamsters in cages too, they dig deep into their bedding and cover themselves too with the bedding material before they sleep. It is an imitation of their way of living in the wild.

So this mat would never replace the purpose of the typical hamster bedding.

  5. Wel....i wouldn't recommend it. Hamsters like to bury themselves when they sleep, and they like to make nests. Also, i think it'll be gross if you get urine and fecal matter and mushed up on it.....ANDD they might gnaw/chew on it, and i don't think thats healthy for them if they swallow it.
