Can you replace halogen bulbs with Compact Fluorescent bulbs?

Most of the lights in my home use Compact Fluorescent bulbs. However, I have two halogen fixtures and I'm not sure if I can replace the halogen bulbs by CFC bulbs. Is it safe to do so or do I absolutely need to change the fixture?

  1. If the halogen lights are those tiny ones that fit into the circles in the roof (often called down lights) you may need to get an electrician in, as they quite often run a different voltage and will need re-wiring (don't worry its not a very big job). You will easily be able to see if this the case as there is no chance that your fluorescent bulbs will come close to fitting into this socket, as they often have tiny pins.

If you actually mean normal incandescent lights (the traditional pear shaped shaped light bulb)  then you have no worries just take your current globe down to the store with you and get a similar size.

Oh and they're not CFC bulbs, CFC stands for chloro-fluorocarbons, a family of chemicals that used to be used in refigeration but were discontinued when they were found to have a damaging effect on the ozone layer.
