Question:

Can you replace the gears in your VW transaxle with a spur gear set cheaply?

I want to either build or buy a cheap transaxle with a non synchro gear set. The only setup like this I have been able to find costs a fortune(thousands). Is there some cheap set I am just not finding?

My main goal is to make a VW transaxle with a close gear ratio to allow shifting without clutching.

Do you have to have spur gears to do this? Or can this be done with close ratio helical gears too if no synchros? or can you do this with synchros too?

  1. It's going to be hard to change gears with a clutch if you go to a non synchro trans.... With a nonsynchronized trans you have to double-clutch to change gears..

using straight cut gears would sound like a runaway supercharger, and be weak on top of it....

If your only real concern is shifting without the clutch... just learn to do it.. most over the road truck drivers only use the clutch to take off and stop....

  2. ^^^^^^^^ She is right.
