I remember hearing somewhere that you can request payment for a job in gold rather than money. Purely out of interest I was wondering what the legality of this is in the UK is and if it's at all possible for your average employer to do so.

  1. Legally, you should be paid with money. As this is the legal tender notes to be used for economics transactions. Using gold is cumbersome & not commonly used (even by a gold mining company)

  2. I don't know where you read that, but as far as it goes, it's true.  You can request payment in gold, or anything else you want, but that doesn't mean you will get it.  if they don't fire you, chances are they will pay you in the common currency.  Most employers do not have a stockpile of gold with which to pay employees.
