This sounds stupid i know but the bedroom im staying in for now has no window but i do have a small A/C i ran the other night just to see what happened and the room got colder but not as cold as it would have been if it were running through a window. My question is.... is it safe to do this?

  1. The heat removed from the air to give the cool output from the front, blows out the back. Also add to that the heat from the motor. Net temperature improvement to the room is less than zero. Also the moisture removed from the cooled air is added to the warm exhaust air and / or drips onto your floor.

The overall result is an increase in the rooms overall temperature.

  2. ive seen portable air conditioners but not the window kind..it looks more like a tower...might wanna check into that..dont think wat ur doing is safe or going to work

  3. That's because you are returning warm air to the room instead of venting it outside. Also these units produce condensation (water) so it's not a good idea.

  4. I agree with Max J., and if there is any way you could deflect the warm air the A/C emits, (even out to the hall), it will help.

But you do need to watch that condensate, or you could ruin the floor.

  5. Yes it's safe.  I hope you get your window in before the rain.

  6. It's probably safe, but not efficient.  The A/C condenser is pumping heat into the room and the evaporator is trying to remove it.  You're not discharging any chemicals or vapors into the room.  Condensate (water) needs to be drained before you have a minor flood.

  7. It probably just felt cooler because of the lower humidity and circulating air.  AC units have to have a place to discharge heat to.  Window units will have the condenser coils exposed to the air outside, which acts as a heat sink for the unit.  The actual refrigerant is in a sealed system, so as far as that goes you don't need to worry about breathing in refrigerants.  If you have a AC unit in another part of your home, using a box fan may actually work better for you.  If you do continue to use the AC unit just sitting in the room to reduce humidity, you'll want to make sure you have some way of collecting the condensation so that you don't soak your carpet.

  8. Yes you can but you would be exhausting the hot air into the same space that you're trying to cool.
