Question:

Can you run long distances too slow?

I'm trying to get to where I can run short distances faster, so I'm following a plan that has me running longer distances each week (5 miles this week). I did last week's long run okay (4 miles), but I'm not sure how fast I went because I didn't time it. I'm just wondering if it is possible to run long distances too slow, or if it's just the distance itself that counts. I can run 3 miles in 27 minutes or so, as of right now, but I'm really worn out afterwards. I'm sure when I did the 4 miles I was going a lot slower than that because I didn't feel that tired at the end- in case anyone's wondering what I mean by slow.

  1. yes make sure that you run these long runs. the reason i say this is because 2 miles is considered an endurance race. so running longer distances will get you ready. just remember that you don't get out too fast while you doing these long runs.that way you can get a full benefit from the workout without getting hurt or getting frustrated.good luck.

  2. pushing yourself is good, but pushing too hard will wear yourself out. its great you're serious about running but do what you can. if you feel you need to slow down, it's not possible to be too slow, just keep moving.

  3. Of course! :]

plus if your in track and those long distance track runners start off fast and you do a fast regular comftable pace

when they are tired you'll be passing those losers  :]

just start practicing slow forl ong distances and then start picking up the pace :]

just work on the tredmil and work on speed work with teh speed levels.

  4. you train running short distance by running long distance? you should do plyrometrics not long distance running.

  5. well you are slow. i run a 2 miles course in about 11 minutes. you should  do carolina's.( thats where you sprint on a track or football field, ans you go line to line going farther each time. )you should spend more time running and less time asking questions.

  6. I'm not sure what the idiot that said you are to slow and you should spend more time running means but thats why the call this yahoo answers; to ask questions. At any rate, as long as you enjoy running and you are not out to try for  the olympics, don't worry about times. 3 miles in 27 minutes isn't fast but IT IS a respectable time. You havn't made any mention of you're age, weight, or fitness level and all of those are key elements in your running times. Just run for the health of it! Good luck and keep running.
