  1. Nope....but you can see St, John & the BVI's, some of the most amazing views I've ever taken in.

  2. Puerto Rico is about 390 miles from St. Thomas. You would not be able to see it, even on a perfectly clear day due to the curvature of the earth. When looking straight forward towards the horizon (no mountains etc. in the way) we see approximately 3 miles away.

  3. we have two wrong answers and one mostly right.

You can easily see Vie-ques and Culebra from St Thomas.

The mainland of PR.....as Hector said, an exceptionally clear day you can see the mountains inland of Fajardo as a smudge on the horizon. and yes, the horizon is 3.5 miles away from someone at sea level, but from 500 foot up the hills on ST T  a 1000 foot high hill on PR is visable 45 plus miles away.

  4. You can see Puerto Rico from St. Thomas (it's 62 miles away) but only under special circumstances.  The visibility has to be perfect or near perfect.  On such a day it's even possible to see St. Croix from the Charlotte Amalie harbor.  The second condition is you need to be at an elevated point on the island with a clear view to the west.  Probably the best location on St. Thomas to catch a glimpse of Puerto Rico in the distance is Mountain Top.

Thanks yankee_sailor.  Just to be sure I'm not taking crazy pills I asked almost everyone I met in the office (and even posted the question on a message board that many locals frequent) and most to them confirmed that they at some point could see Puerto Rico on a clear day.
