  1. The difference in picture quality with a HDMI cable versus a component cable is minuscule. But, digital audio is so much easier to decode than digital video that the sound track can become out of sync. HDMI cables have a provision to keep the sound and video tracks synchronized. This can be a significant advantage for the use of an HDMI cable, especially between a HD satellite set-top box and a HDTV.


  2. I experimented with a customer and plugged 1 then the other they chose the component. I can not tell the difference. Even though hdmi is digital and component is analog.

It would depend on the size of the tv - the larger tv's are going to show the detail more clearly.  A lot of people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080, so it depends on screen size and how far you are from the screen.  It would be easier to see if you had the exact same tv side by side with the 2 different inputs.
