Can you see france from the u.k?

i`ve been told you can see france from devon , can`t see it myself

  1. Hi

    you cannot see France from Devon.

    However on clear days you can see Calais from the white cliffs of Dover, and you can Dover from Cap Gris Nez.

  2. I lived in Devon and I never saw France (my home) from there ! it's impossible !

    But once, on a very clear day, on the ferry, I saw the English and French coasts at the same time ; not for long, very briefly, but enough to know that, at that precise moment,  we were sailing half way between the 2 countries !

    And of course, by plane, you can also see them clearly

  3. The typical sight line to the horizon is just over 25 miles on a flat surface such as over water.

    If there are tall buildings that may be extented to 30 miles because of the curvature of the earth

    That is why you just see the tops of the buildings from that distance
