I would do it when I could have ceiling fans and windows open. It can cause some smoke and unpleasant smell.

That is how i clean mine.  I just turn it on  just before i go to bed mine has a timer and shuts off, make sure yours shuts off automatically thats the really important part then in the morning scrub it out its a cinch.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my oven on 700 degrees for a few hours while I'm asleep.

warm up a bowl that has some ammonia in it, leave all night and wipe the inside next day
