Question:

Can you separate DNS control and mail service?

Does hosting DNS generally go hand-in-hand with hosting mail? I have a domain registered at GoDaddy but wanted to use Yahoo mail for domain mail using one of the Yahoo Small Business Services -- all while having the domain's Web pages hosted by a third company (simply because I already have space there and free additional domain options available).

I found that plugging in Yahoo's primary and secondary nameserver info on the GoDaddy DNS page then moves all DNS control to Yahoo. That's fine, as both are great companies that seem to both offer a high level of control (i.e. designating "A record," CNAME Record and MX Records). I'm just curious if there are different ways to configure this division of DNS and services between companies.

  1. I did something like this recently for my domain, I changed the A record to point to the new dns servers (for the web site) but left the mx record alone. End result, my web site is on the new host but my email still goes through my original host.

  3. Whichever set of DNS's you choose needs to have all of the rules for your domain.  Once you decide which ones you want to use, you will need to configure each type of record to point to the correct IP.  You can point the MX records to servers at a different location from those pointed to by the A record.

  4. all you need to do is add ip address for each service that will be on a different server with the host name

    ex

    www.yourdomain.com points to 69.63.2.132

    mail.yourdomain.com points to 65.24.6.7

    ftp.yourdoamn.com points to 63.45.7.123

all using the same dns, i am assuming that you are using godaddys dns unless you are using zoneedit or another free dns service.

not sure why you want to seperate dns service if all you reall want to do is have the services directed to another ip address where the service is actually at.
