  1. not on a regular machine.. only on an over-lock or serger.top and bottom threads bind fabric.  on over-lock or serger it loops on bottom.

  2. my sewing machine came with an extra bobbin case that requires no bobbin but allows the machine to sew a chain stitch with just the top thread. so YES if you have the right machine.

  3. When sewing with a standard sewing machine, the top thread and the bobbin thread mend the fabric together. Thus, you need a spool thread for the top and a bobbin thread for the bottom to sew. Specialty machines sew with one thread.

  4. You need both the top and bottom thread in order to create a "lock stitch" -- a stitch that won't pull out.

There are machines that do a chain-stitch -- normally toy machines or industrial machines used for poor quality clothes -- that use only the top thread.  They basically create a series of slip-knots from the single thread.

If you've ever had a cheap garment that had a thread hanging -- and the garment became "unsewed" when you pulled that thread -- then that stitch was done with a chainstitch machine.

Chainstitching does have legitimate uses -- but only in special situations.  Usually you'll use a lockstitch machine for your own personal home sewing.

  5. No you need an upper thread and lower thread to get the right stitch.
