As my time of being educated at home draws to a close, I wanted to hear from my fellow homeschoolers about their homeschool success stories. What did you think of being home schooled? Did you enjoy it or did you not? If there was anything that you could change what would it be? What was your favorite part about being homeschooled? What was your least favorite part? Give an example of some of the methods, if any, that you used to learn at home.

  1. What did I think about being home schooled? Everything! I loved it do no end. Mainly the fact that I could stay home with my family and not have to be crammed into a classroom with a whole group of other children like I am today, just to say I'm educated. I loved going so many places with my parents, mueseum, art mueseum, science mueseum, zoo, library, candy shop, park, you name it and I've been their with my family.

When I was home schooled I could go at my own pace. For example, right now I'm writing a research paper that all the Junior at my school have to write. If there is one thing I have a hard time doing it is writing research papers. I feel so rushed right now and stressed out that it isn't even funny!

If there was anything that I could have changed, it would have been the fact that I started public school in 4th grade. I would go back to being homeschooled in a heart beat! My parents were very hands on, which is what I loved so much. I'm not your 'sit down and write' type of a girl, I learn better by doing things.

Basically, I was homeschooled and I'm proud of it!

  2. I unschool my two children and it has been a wonderful experience.  It's really more of a lifestyle than a school.  As they are now pretty much grown, I have more confidence than ever that unschooling is simply the best way to live.

My kids are wonderful people with such amazing skills that it just blows me away.  I love spending time with them since they are just nice lovely people.

    :D

  3. What did I think of being homeschooled?  I loved it!  It was always my choice to go to school or not and I always chose homeschooling.  There is such freedom, so much more me time and family time when you homeschool.

Yeah, I totally enjoyed it.  In fact, I get pretty fed up with all the c**p I have to put up with in college and cannot wait to get my degree and get out.  I can't imagine what my life would have been like had my parents not cared and sent me to school.

I guess I would change my high school graduation.  I graudated with a huge homeschool group but I didn't even know most of the kids.  I wish I would have just had a nice little ceremony with my friends and family.

My favorite part was the freedom to choose my own curriculum and set my own schedule.  I am an early bird so my school work was usually done by eleven and then I had the rest of the day to practice violin, hang out with friends, read a good book, get a job, etc.

Least favorite part was people asking rude/stupid questions all the time.  Once I was at Borders with a huge group of friends and when a lady found out we were all homeschooled she asked how we deal with socialization.  Hello?!  What did she think we were all doing there?

Methods at our house....hmmm.... lots of reading and writing.  Even in the summer we were expected to read and write.

  4. I've homeschooled my entire life and I LOOOOVE it! My favorite thing is getting to take so much extra time off and my least favorite thing is being stuck at home with my brothers alllllll daaaaaaaaaaay loooooooong. But no one's been murdered yet, so far, so good.

Homeschoolers are SO not "socially deprived/inept" and whoever says that doesn't know what they're talking about! I am more involved in activities than most of my public-school friends!

  5. I got involved with drugs in middle school so my parents pulled me out (this was neccessary b/c I would have failed with so much time in rehab) and began homeschooling.

I immediately was more challenged and involved in my education. I learned more in the few years I was at home than I ever did in the public school system. My mom used a literary approach to just about every subject. Having to read and write extensively was so helpful in my college experience.

I am about to graduate from a good four university and am a Phi Beta Kappa student. I am involved in college life without falling prey to the dumb mistakes that lots of kids make.

I really loved my homeschooling experience because it taught me sooo much more than than what is required of highschoolers.

  6. What did you think of being home schooled? I have been home schooled ever since Pre-K, and I am proud to say that the only time I have ever stepped inside of a public school classroom was 3 weeks ago when I took the SAT. Yes, I really like being home schooled and wouldn't have it any other way.

Did you enjoy it or did you not?I have enjoyed every minute of it! Of course, it is tiring being around your siblings 24/7, but I think I am closer to my siblings than I would if we went to our own individual schools.

If there was anything that you could change what would it be? I would change the mind set of these parents and kids who think that home schooling is cruelty and that the children who are home schooled are socially deprived. They obviously don't know what they are talking about. ;)

What was your favorite part about being home schooled? The best part about being home schooled is you get to work with things hands-on, and the curriculum is Christian-based and not filled with "hog wash."  Plus, you learn loads more than you do in a standard public school!

What was your least favorite part? The distractions that you have inside of the home. It is so hard not to become distracted with other things (like the internet, video games, etc.), but that's where strong discipline comes in.

  7. My son was home schooled, and graduated from high school 2 years ago at the age of 16.  He has traveled all over the world doing mission work with the church youth groups he was involved in.  We are a very close family and have excellent social and communication skills.  The ones who talk of poor social skills and isolation need to place the blame on THEMSELVES and not home schooling.  Unless you are locked in a cage 24/7 the only reason you will miss social skills is if you choose to.

  8. I'm not one of the lucky one's that can say they've enjoyed it....

But it's been better for doing things on my own time....

One thing I'd change? Never would have been homeschooled....

Favorite part? I like the fact I can do work on my own time, and work more on the subjects I like, take vactions as long as I'd like, have more time to act, and go on auditions, Ect....

Least? Not to many friends, lost quite a bit of people skills, feeling left out, being around my family ALOT, don't think I've learned what I could have....Gosh, honestly....Do you have enough time?

But it's been an exprience, it's just one of those things I'll look back on and say, "It was interesting, but sure wouldn't do it again if I did it over"

    But I've had some fun....

    =)
