  1. you can tone your legs, but unless you have some pretty fat thighs your legs will probably get bigger from adding muscle faster than you're burning fat, at least initially. If you keep at it, you'll hit a point where you stop adding muscle (assuming you keep the same workout intensity) and thats when the fat will really start to disappear. As for how long it will take, that entirely depends on how hard you're willing to work.

  2. No. Nelson Vales, the best sprinter I've ever ridden with, has thighs that would make a frog's thighs look small in relative proportion.

  3. Y -You can also adopt a slightly different riding style than you may be used to.  One of the best gym workouts is "spinning" on the excercise bike.  Nothing tones your legs quicker or faster.

So if you aren't looking to add mass foregoe the hard cranking workouts where each push of the pedal takes a mighty effort...

Rather focus on spinning - get up to a speed that's comfortable in the gear you'd normally use... now while cruising downshift to a lower gear.  Your feet will feel less resistance - but don't slow down the bike!  Keep it moving by increasing your rotations per minute on the pedals!

This is what pro cyclists do as well - spinning provides a great aerobic workout.  People often make the mistake that they need to be straining on the pedals to get a workout.  Yeah there's some anaerobic benefits... but spinning is the way to go.

You are going to love it because if you have heavy thighs you probably know about knee pain associated with excercise.  Spinning and cycling actually help your body and your joints become more limber and flexible as well as toning and helping you burn the calories you need to lose the weight.

This is exciting!  You can do this!  See you in the bike lane.
