  1. You can smoke any plant you want.  The real question is are you prepared for the side effects?  Just do yourself a favor and don't smoke anything at all.  You have nothing to gain and everything to lose when you run around smoking things.

  2. No the effects will not be the same.  Infact, I don't think you will feel anything.

From my understanding, it must be a specific plant called "Salvia divinorum - Diviner's sage"

The plant is found in isolated, shaded, and moist plots in Oaxaca, Mexico. It grows to well over a meter in height, has large green leaves, and hollow square stems with occasional white and purple flowers. It is thought to be a cultigen.[7] Its primary psychoactive constituent is a diterpenoid known as salvinorin A[8][9]—a potent κ-opioid receptor agonist. Salvinorin A is unique in that it is the only naturally occurring substance known to induce a visionary state this way. Salvia divinorum can be chewed or smoked to produce experiences ranging from uncontrollable laughter to much more intense and profoundly altered states. The duration is much shorter than for some other more well known psychedelics; the effects of smoked Salvia typically last for only a few minutes. The most commonly reported after-effects include an increased feeling of insight and improved mood, and a sense of calmness and increased sense of connection with nature—though much less often it may also cause dysphoria (unpleasant or uncomfortable mood). Salvia divinorum is not generally understood to be toxic or addictive

  3. Salvia is the mint family, which contains hundreds of species.  Smoke any of them you want.  All the psychoactive plants are well known so if you're looking to get high, you know the options already.  You aren't going to discover any more.

  4. You can smoke it, but it would not have any effects other than trashing your lungs.

Do some research on SD and be very respectful. It is highly regarded as a shamanistic plant in some indigenous societies in Mexico.

  5. sk is right, for the most part. There is maybe one or two other species of salvia (which being the idiot I am forgot them) that may have a light "buzzing" effect, similar to a small amount of marijuana. Now, take this with a grain of salt, but for the most part it is true.

There is no other species of salvia that will have effects anywhere NEAR that of salvia divinorum. By the way, Salvia divinorum is the tall plant with the purple flowers.
