Three ladies go to a restaurant for a meal. They receive a bill for $30. They each put $10 on the table, which the waiter collects and takes to the till. The cashier informs the waiter that the bill should only have been for $25 and returns $5 to the waiter in $1 coins. On the way back to the table the waiter realizes that he cannot divide the coins equally between the ladies. As they didn’t know the total of the revised bill, he decides to put $2 in his own pocket and give each of the ladies $1.

Now that each lady has been given a dollar back, each of the ladies has paid $9. Three times 9 is 27. The waiter has $2 in his pocket. Two plus 27 is $29. The ladies originally handed over $30. Where is the missing dollar?

  1. the cashier has it

  2. There is no missing dollar. There is a missing $2 dollars (as well as cleverly left out words in the riddle's question) . Don't let the words confuse you. The ladies got ripped off.

  3. The $27 already includes the $2 that the waiter pocketed. So instead we would add the 3 dollars they recieved back, which WOULD make it 30$

  4. The tip for the waiter

  5. Guests Contribution: 10 * 3 = 30

    Total Bill                              (25)

    Add: Waiter's Tip                  (02)

    Total Payments                     27

    Remaining amount                 03 / 3 * Guests

    Returned Funds                     01 each

    :-)

  6. The answer is that there is no missing dollar. Adding $27 and $2 (to get $29) is the wrong operation. They paid $27, $2 went to the dishonest waiter, and $25 went to the restaurant. You have to subtract $27 minus $2 to get $25. There never was a $29; it has nothing to do with anything.

  7. Oh how tricky! There IS no missing dollar. Instead of adding the $2 the waiter has, you subtract it from the $27 the ladies "paid" because they didn't SPEND the $5.

amount originally paid - (what ladies got back + what waiter took) = $25

  8. You simply just put the wrong calculation. The ($9 times 3) calculation already includes the $2 that was pocketed, so $25 went to the restaurant and $2 to the waiter then $3 back to the ladies. which equals to $30!
