  1. i think you need a social security number.  You will have to wait until you have a birth certificate to get a number.

No, because it is linked to the child's social security number.  If you really want to start saving before they are born you should probably just place it in an interest bearing account like a money market for now.  You can always transfer it over to the 529 plan once the child is born and you have it set up.

    Sarah Jane is correct but I really don't see the point or benefit of doing that.  Besides what happens (God forbid) if you lose the child.  If you can't transfer it or use it for higher education then you would be penalized 10%.  Why take that risk?

  4. Yes, you can- you have to set it up for yourself, and then you can transfer it to your child when the child is born.
