Hi, is anyone out there an expert on Lazio? My aged mother in law wants to see rome/vatican city but she is not very mobile and i dont fancy putting her in a hotel in the centre of rome....are there any restful areas or nice hotels that are say an hour or so by train??? we would be grateful for some advice, when you search for Lazio hotels you only get Rome!

  1. Well my advice is, if she is not really mobile, to actually get a room in the centre of Rome. This is because Rome's centre is very much of a walking place, and I am not sure you mother is law would benefit from going outside Rome. Commuting is frankly a nightmare, public transport services are poor, chaotic and overcrowded. There are some lovely resorts in Lazio, the nicest and closest to Rome being OSTIA, where you can also see the ancient roman ruins if  you want. The city is nice, not very small though, and the seaside is very nice, but extremely busy in the summer! You can get to Ostia by train from the centre of Rome fairly easily, but even if Ostia is nice, I would definitely think about it twice before going outside rome ;) You can also check the countryside, places like Tivoli (also has a natural SPA) and the area called CASTELLI ROMANI are worth a try.

  2. As others have said, Ostia is the main beach area for Rome.

But with an not very mobile person I would book the Excelsior hotel on the Via Veneto and take taxis and private cars around Rome.

  3. Look at this site!

Castelli Romani (Ariccia, Frascati, Marino...) near Rome (about 20km), very very nice places, excellent wine and food as you want! :)))

  4. HARDLY SURPRISING-SEEING THAT LAZIO IS IN ROME.IT REALLY IS AN AWESOME CITY-BUT BEWARE WHEN YOU BOOK HOTELS-JUST LET'S SAY A 4 STAR HOTEL IN ROME IS THE EQUIVALENT OF A 2 STAR IN THE U.K.-BLOODY EXPENSIVE PLACE  TO EAT,DRINK AND BE MERRY,THO!!

  5. Ostia Lido is a part of Rome but not to far it is about 15 km from Rome. Ostia is has a nice beach, tube station, shops restaurants and pubs.
