"Vietnam to end adoption program with US after report

By VU TIEN HONG – Apr 28, 2008

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam is ending a child adoption agreement with the United States after being accused of allowing baby-selling and corruption, officials said Monday.

The agreement was being considered for renewal but the two sides remained far apart over revisions, said Vu Duc Long, director of Vietnam's International Adoption Agency. The agreement is due to expire on Sept. 1.

In a letter sent to the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi on Friday, Vietnam said it will stop taking adoption applications from American families after July 1 but will continue to process applications of families who are matched with babies before July 1.

The decision was made following a report from the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi that was first obtained by The Associated Press, alleging pervasive corruption and baby-selling in Vietnam's adoption system."

  2. From what I have seen recently any adoptions in the works will be processed but no new adoptions can be started after July 1st, 2008.  Vietnam has halted the adoptions because of a study done by the US which showed that Vietnam's adoption practices were not on the up and up.  Basically Vietnam got mad and was like..."s***w you" you can't adopt anymore.

  3. Frankly, I think it is a good thing that adoptions are being stopped from Vietnam and Guatamala. Too many countries have lost too many children to our country. Corruption is rampant in both of these countries, and in China. Infant adoption from these countries is often done due to the fact that the child being adopted will probably have a very poor chance of finding natural family if and when they search. (NO pesky natural mother to deal with right?) I have actually head women state that very reason for doing an international adoption. And that makes me ill...

  4. i think i read in the news paper (plain dealer) that vietnam is banning all americans from adopting vietnamese children due to a wide array of reasons including selling babies, abandoning babies, and i'm pretty sure malnutrition. This reputation needs to stop. I don't want our nation looked down upon by other cultures and vietnam is threatening never giving back our rights to adopt babies from their country.
