Question:

Can you still buy fresh live rock oysters in Sydney?

They used to be sold in little shops which sold nothing else. the oysters were fresh caught and the shells were opened up only when you placed your order. The little buggers were still alive when you squeezed lemon juice onto them, plopped them into your mouth, right off the shell, and slithered them down your throat. so delicious. No oysters anywhere in the world are as good as those fresh Sydney rock oysters. Are they still being sold there?

  1. Many top end restaurants use live oyster now.  I am currently using them, and really wouldn't use the opened ones any more.

They normally have only been out of the water for a day, and still pulsate when I open them.

Mid north coast you can get them(Forster is a good one), but because the oyster leases in Sydney are not as productive as they use to be it isn't as common.

  2. yes I believe they are still sold although they can be rather pricey. you will also have to search hard because fewer places sell them now since they are so much cheaper at the Sydney fish markets.

  3. Coffin Bay oysters are good too, try the Sydney fish markets, I was in Sydney a few months back for dinner and was told to check out the fish markets if I was interested in fresh fish and seafood.  The best oysters I have had were served up to me at a Sydney restaurant 'Tetsuya's' it's in Kent Street, and is currently listed as the 5th best restaurant in the world.  Check it out if you like your food.

  4. my experience is that even at the Sydney Fishmarkets, the "freshly shucked" oysters have been opened and then rinsed under tap water, they apparently have to do that according to health regs. The best option I have found is the "takeaway" ie buy a couple of doz unopened, and enjoy them within 20 seconds of opening them yourself,
