I am going to Mexico in October and I am wanting to visit the ruins of El Castillo. I was wondering if you can still climb it. Also should we book the tour with our cruise line or try to do it ourself?

  1. Sorry, you can not climb El Castillo. I believe someone got hurt a few years back.

I would book with the cruise line. This way if they are delayed, your ship will wait for you. If you do it on your own and you miss the ship, you will have to catch up at the next port. Don't take the chance.

    Enjoy)

  2. In recent years, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which manages the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, has been closing monuments to public access. While visitors can walk around them, they can no longer climb them or go inside their chambers.

Climbing El Castillo was halted in 2006 after a woman fell to her death. At the same time INAH closed the public access to the throne room

  3. Nope you cant anymore. :-( but at Coba you can and those ruins are the highest in the Yucatan.
