My friend said that homeschooling and GEDs don't look good on your college app. and that universities don't even accept you. I want to home school but I also want to get into a university. Are home schoolers stuck with community college?

  1. NO!

My sisters ( 2 of them)

    BOTH got into Universities!

    Both have wonderful jobs.

AND were home-schooled ALL there lives.

So YES you can get into universities.

And numerous colleges actually seek out Homeschooled students because of there higher

    intellectually

    Social skills

    Grades

    Vocabulary

    etc.

    Hope this helps!!

  2. No, heaps of universities are more than happy to have home-educated kids as they tend already to be self-disciplined, self-motivated and used to both studying independently and studying 'outside of the box'.

Both my oldest brother and sister had no trouble whatsoever getting into top-ranking universities despite never having been to school nor having any formal school qualifications; my sister was even approached by the university and offered a (totally unsolicited!) place on her degree course.

  3. Not at all. First of all, you don't even need to get a GED. If you're homeschooled, your parents can issue your diploma and it's just as good. Universities are only concerned about your transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, and community involvement. Homeschoolers actually have the advantage

  4. No, your friend is very wrong. My mother is a college professor and she homeschooled me through most of my highschool years. Statistics actually show that children who are homeschooled show more academic improvement than the children in the public school system. I was homeschooled until my 4th year then I had to get the diploma on my own because the state made a law that I couldn't obtain my diploma through homeschool. I'm enrolled in a very good university right now and they didn't give me any hassles regarding my homeschooling program.

  5. Was your friend homeschooled?  If not, I would tend to disregard anything they have to say about it.  I don't know anything about cars and would never tell me friends how to fix a car.

That being said, I am currently in college after homeschooling K-12.  I had no problem taking classes at the community college during high school and neither did any of my homeschool freinds.  Shoot, I even have friends who were in college classes at age 12 and 14.  In public school they would have been put in the accelerated program but they wouldn't have even been able to be in AP classes at that age because they weren't old enough for high school.  So yeah, lots of homeschoolers are stuck with community college during highschool!

I had no problem getting into any of the colleges I applied to and even won scholarships from most of them.  Your friend is right about one thing though, GED's don't look good.  They're still assiciated with high school dropouts.  But homeschooling does look good.  My admissions officer even told me that homeschoolers have a better chance of getting into the school of their choice than public schoolers because college's love homeschoolers.

I have had numerous professors let me know that they appreciate the different outlook I bring to class and my ability and willingness to participate in and lead class discussions and groups.

So if you really want to get into college, then homeschool!

Take a look at figure 1.  You might be surprised at what you find!
