Question:

Can you still get sun damage (wrinkles) even if you use sunblock?

I don't want wrinkles but I do want benefits of the sun, if there are any? What do I do?

Is it true that some sun is good for you? Because I try to avoid the sun and always use sunblock, and sunglasses. Is that OK?

Are there benefits to sun light? If so, is it canceled out by sunglasses and sunblock?

Should I get out more and if so how much? What do I do. Thanks!

(I know this is long, but I appreciate it even if you don't answer all of it! Have a nice day. :)

  1. Two advantages:  If you are genetically predisposed to SAD, 15 minutes a day of sunlight into the eyes.  Daily Vitamin D (the 15 minutes is enough).

Sunblock isn't magic.  It's a generic term - some are more reliable than others, some are more accurate in predicting their level of protection.  You need protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Put on sunblock in a generous amount half an hour before going out, it you want to get full protection and a good chance at the advertised spf.  Reapply hourly and after being in water.

Wear a hat.  Wear high spf (tight weave) clothing.

  2. No sunblock is 100%, but some come pretty close, and they are only as effective as how well you put them on.  Some people put on too little sun screen, and then wonder why they got burned.

Your body uses sunlight to make vitamin D, but you don't need very much sun to accomplish what your body needs.  You could also take a vitimin supplement.

Sunlight also helps reduce depression, and generally makes everyone feel happier - and that effect won't be reduced by sunblock or sunglasses.  There are even more benefits to being outside, being active and social, rather than staying inside.

So keep going out, and use sunblock, sunglasses, and hats.
