I'm a vegan and would like to take probiotics rather than stuff up on anti-biotics. The probiotics commonly available are curds, etc.

Any easily available vegan alternatives?

  1. You certainly can take these in pill form. Try a supplement store or online supplement store to check out your options. Not all probiotics/digestive enzymes come from animals. Papain (pah-pay-ean) is a digestive enzyme from papaya, for example.

  2. It is possible to make soy yogurts with probiotic cultures such as acidophilus. I'm not sure what brands are available in your country but why don't you try your local supermarket/co-op. Just check the ingrediants list to see if they use live cultures.

There are also probiotics available in pill form; however, these were developed by a researcher at my university so I don't know how world-wide they are. Try asking your local chemist.

Sorry this answer isn't too specific but I hope it at least gives you hope that there are vegan sources of probiotics out there... best of luck tracking them down :)
